Sulforaphane is a sulphur compound belonging to isothiocyanates - the active extract from cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage stimulates the expression of genes that suppress oxidative stress, inflammation and DNA damage. It is a powerful antioxidant and exhibits antimicrobial properties.

Sulforaphane also enhances mitochondrial function, promotes glutathione (GSH) synthesis and crosses the blood-brain barrier to reduce nerve inflammation. The researchers used the extract to monitor three areas of the brain for glutathione levels in healthy volunteers before and after taking sulforaphane. They discovered that after seven days, there was about a 30% increase in the average glutathione levels in the brains of the subjects.

Sulforaphane is primarily known as a natural cancer-protective compound. Sulforaphane can be helpful in people with H. pylori infection. It prevents colonisation of this bacterium, inhibits damage to the gastric mucosa and reduces inflammation.

Sulforaphane exerts antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects in mice: it exerts antianxiety effects in mice with stress-induced depression, inhibits HPA axis activity in mice with stress-induced depression, and inhibits the inflammatory response in mice with stress-induced depression.

Sulforaphane also shows a potential effect on serotonin release - when Caco-2 cells were exposed to it, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor protein levels increased.
