What is Barberry?
Common barberry is a medicinal plant that contains a wide range of valuable ingredients. It is an excellent source of tannins, berberine, saponins, pectins, carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamin E, and mineral salts. The plant is known for its antioxidant properties. Moreover, it effectively supports immunity, has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, bile-promoting, and bile-producing effects. It is used to treat diarrhea, rheumatic ailments, and smooth muscle cramps. We offer barberry in the form of a dietary supplement. Each tablet contains 500 mg of barberry root extract. The product is standardized to 2% berberine, and the package contains 60 tablets.
Barberry for Immunity
Supplementing with barberry is particularly recommended when the immune system is weakened or during flu season. The plant’s action in this regard is linked to its high vitamin C content, which is crucial for the proper functioning of the immune system. Vitamin C is also a strong antioxidant, effective in fighting various infections and increasing the body's ability to defend itself against pathogens. It stimulates the production of white blood cells, which play a key role in the immune response. Additionally, as an antioxidant, it protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. Reducing oxidative stress also influences the immune system by lowering the risk of many diseases.
Barberry also stands out for its anti-inflammatory effects, due to the presence of isoquinoline alkaloids (mainly berberine) and tannins. It works by inhibiting the production and activity of inflammatory factors. As a result, supplementation can be highly effective in treating skin conditions like acne, as well as other inflammatory issues (e.g., gum diseases, canker sores, or thrush). An additional benefit is the reduction of pain associated with inflammatory processes in the body, making it a good choice for throat pain.
Barberry Supplementation for Improving Metabolism and Sugar Regulation
The plant is also known for its ability to improve metabolic functions. It achieves this in several ways. The first is by regulating blood sugar levels. The key ingredient, berberine, helps improve insulin sensitivity and increases glucose absorption by cells. This helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Therefore, the supplement is popular among individuals diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes.
Barberry also positively affects cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body, thanks to berberine. This compound helps lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while increasing "good" HDL cholesterol. In a broader sense, this reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Other properties of the plant include supporting digestion. This is achieved by stimulating the secretion of stomach juices and bile. As a result, nutrient absorption improves, and the plant helps with indigestion and other digestive issues. Additionally, barberry aids in the elimination of toxins and metabolic waste products from the body. Due to its diuretic and laxative properties, it supports kidney and liver health. By regulating metabolism, it also aids in weight loss and maintaining a healthy body weight.
How else does Barberry work?
Barberry supplementation is recommended for individuals dealing with stress and anxiety. The supplement has a calming effect, reducing nervous tension, which can improve sleep quality. Furthermore, barberry positively affects mood, and regular use can enhance overall well-being and emotional state.
In recent years, barberry has been studied for its potential use in cancer prevention and treatment. This is linked to its described antioxidant activity. Free radicals are considered one of the factors contributing to the development of cancer. Moreover, berberine has shown the ability to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells and may potentially influence their life cycle by limiting growth and spread. In the future, it may be used as a complement to traditional cancer treatments.
