L-ornithine is an amino acid that plays a key role in the urea cycle and the metabolism of ammonia and urea synthesis in the body. Ammonia is produced with the consumption of essential proteins (through the breakdown of amino acids, purines and pyrimidines), converted to urea and then excreted in the urine. Ornithine deficiency adversely affects the urea cycle, so that the liver or kidneys may be subjected to greater strain.
