Saffron is the most expensive plant in the world valued for its aphrodisiac properties. It is used in traditional Eastern cuisine in minimal quantities due to its high cost. The plant is rich in many chemical compounds and antioxidants, of which crocin and safranal are considered the most important. 

It has been shown to have a strong mood-enhancing effect - including in people with depression. It also helps to maintain emotional balance in states of hormonal imbalance - e.g. it tones down mood swings associated with the menstrual cycle, menopause or PCOS.
