Keratin, the tough structural protein behind hair and nails, derives its strength almost entirely from disulfide bonds — direct chemical crosslinks formed when two cysteine molecules bond through their sulfur atoms.
These bonds act like molecular rivets, holding keratin's protein strands together in a resilient, elastic network. The more cysteine available during keratin production, the more of these crosslinks form, and the stronger, more damage-resistant the resulting hair shaft or nail plate becomes.
This isn't a cosmetic industry talking point; it is basic, well-established structural biochemistry, and it explains why hair and nails, of all tissues in the body, are so disproportionately dependent on a single amino acid.
Why does cysteine deficiency affect hair and nails so quickly?
When cysteine supply or metabolism is disrupted, the consequences show up visibly and relatively quickly, since hair and nails are among the fastest-growing tissues in the body and therefore among the first to reflect a nutritional shortfall.
Brittle, splitting, or ridged nails and fragile hair prone to breakage are classic signs documented in dermatology literature on nutritional deficiencies.

Skin draws on the same underlying raw material, but through a different pathway. Cysteine-built glutathione is the primary antioxidant system protecting skin cells from the oxidative damage caused by UV exposure, pollution, and normal cellular metabolism, tying this beauty pathway back to overall skin resilience and barrier health, not just surface tone or brightness.
In that sense, hair, nails, and skin all draw from the same shared cysteine pool, competing for the same limited raw material whenever supply is tight.

Where does NAC fit into this picture? As a stable, bioavailable precursor to both cysteine and glutathione, it plausibly supports the raw material supply chain behind keratin production and skin's antioxidant defenses simultaneously, rather than targeting just one tissue.
It is worth being direct about the current state of the evidence here: large-scale clinical trials testing NAC specifically for hair growth or nail strength outcomes are still limited compared with the depth of research on NAC's respiratory, liver, and psychiatric applications. The underlying mechanism is sound and thoroughly documented at the biochemical level; the beauty-specific clinical outcome data is a promising area that is still catching up to the mechanism.
